Guelph Lake Olympic Triathlon Race Report

Guelph Lake Olympic Triathlon Race Report

Well, my season has officially kicked off. On Saturday, I participated in the Guelph Lake Olympic Triathlon at the Guelph Lake Conservation Area in… you guessed it… Guelph. All in all, it was a pretty good day for me and I’m generally happy with my results and with the event itself. I managed to take advantage of the increased training load this season and drop a few new PRs, test out some new equipment and skills, and still have some…

Back to Work?

Back to Work?

Recovery week is over, so its time to get back to work. I think? In the last few posts I’d complained about a hamstring/calf problem. In the last 5 or 6 days of focused recovery that problem hadn’t gone away, which led me to skipping workouts. One would expect this would actually make the problem disappear, especially if it is a muscle strain or similar. Instead, the problem spread rapidly. My lower back area was stiff and painful 24 hours…

Weekly Workouts – April 24 to April 30

Weekly Workouts – April 24 to April 30

Weekly Stats: Swim: 13750m, TSS 315.8 Bike: 233 km, TSS 550.5 Run: 27.6 km, TSS 236.5 Total Duration: 14:22 Total TSS: 1102.7 CTL: 127.2 ATL: 171.2 Form: -39.3 A very odd week. Monday & Tuesday were non-training days, so I tried to cram in lots of work through the rest of the week. I’m not really sure where to begin, or how to feel about this. Just a strange week. Unfortunate that I missed my TSS goal, but next week is…

Nuts Week….

Nuts Week….

This has been a crazy nuts week. Honestly, I have no idea how to feel about it. Monday & Tuesday I wrote about a bit here. Short version – took two days to spend with my wife and not train, with the exception of a Tuesday morning FTP test on the bike (with excellent results, so points in the plus column). My weekly TSS goal was 1310, which is a lot. As of right now, Saturday evening, I’m sitting at…

Weekly Workouts – April 17 to April 23

Weekly Stats: Swim: 4600m, TSS 103.1 Bike: 261 km, TSS 760.7 Run: 43.9 km, TSS 363.3 Total Duration: 14:39 Total TSS: 1227.1 CTL: 121.2 ATL: 177.9 Form: -37.5 With the pool closed again this week, I had to make up some TSS in the other two disciplines. I also had a really lousy swim on one of my workouts, and I bailed after just 1400m, so really didn’t do much of anything in the pool this week. My arms were feeling…

Learning lots about how much intensity is too much this week

Learning lots about how much intensity is too much this week

After another up-and-down week (with last week also being up-and-down), I’m starting to figure out exactly what is going on. This week I’ve learned a few important things. Primarily, I’m starting to narrow in on how much intensity is too much. It doesn’t seem to matter how strong I think I am, or how well a run goes, or how large my aerobic engine is getting. If I do a hard run workout that goes really well, guaranteed I’ll feel…

Waking up at 5AM to workout is especially fun when the workout involves coffee and not working out

Waking up at 5AM to workout is especially fun when the workout involves coffee and not working out

This morning’s workout is… coffee! I swear I got up on time and everything, made it downstairs with my workout stuff on, and then clued in that I could work out after work. This immediately seemed like a great idea, and I promptly hit the coffee maker and grabbed my track pants. Yesterday was my least favourite workout of the week – the long run. I actually had a pretty great run, so this is not a complaint at all….

Blade Carbon Wheels, Fat Dogs, and Measuring Improvement!

Blade Carbon Wheels, Fat Dogs, and Measuring Improvement!

My Blade Carbon Wheels are arriving next week! Very excited about this one. My Blade Carbon Wheels are going to be here next week, which means I’ll be riding outside again in no time. The weather is starting to be consistently warmer, winds are returning to seasonal, and sun is shining bright. It’s bike riding season! I do a great deal of training with Trainer Road on my turbo trainer. The turbo is great because it requires consistent effort, not…

Hard Recovery

Hard Recovery

Yep, Blargh. The long run from yesterday tapped me a bit. Feeling drained today, so much so that I even have my compression socks on. I should have had them on last night post-run but didn’t think about it. Hard recovery. My 5 AM ride today was supposed to be 80 minutes with 4 x 15 at sweet spot intensity (75% to 90% FTP today) – Trainer Road’s Glassy. I managed to get the first two done but after that my…

Long Run with Long Hills brings Long Hurt

Long Run with Long Hills brings Long Hurt

Last year I shifted my long runs to early in the week. I found that of all the workouts I do, this is the one that I loathe the most. Running is now my weakest discipline, probably by a pretty wide margin. I haven’t really learned how to suffer well while running. I’m getting there, and hope to this year, but definitely am not there yet. That actually sounds pretty awful. But what I mean is that part of training…
