Busting Out

Busting Out

I’m busting out of this rut. Here’s what’s up. This morning I had a terrible ride. That makes 2 of the last 4 rides being awful, with the others being not particularly great. Antelope +5 is 7 x 10 min in the sweet spot over 2 hrs. Should be do-able. I’ve done it before. It’s actually kind of fun. But it sucked, hard. So hard in fact that I stopped my ride mid-ride. I finished the first hour and quit….

In a bit of a rut it seems

In a bit of a rut it seems

I am thinking it is definitely temporary but I’ve been in a bit of a rut lately. Cycling is going mostly well, and yesterday I managed to get some pool time in. Still haven’t run since last Tuesday though. The rut is a small one. My workout this morning was frustrating. I just couldn’t seem to hit the power target. Not sure why, but I tried adjusting the resistance on the trainer twice, deflating and re-inflating my rear tire, and…

Something Pretty Awesome Just Happened! And How to Rock Your FTP Test!

Something Pretty Awesome Just Happened! And How to Rock Your FTP Test!

Today was the first day of TrainerRoad’s Sweet Spot Base High Volume 2, which means… FTP Test! I knew that I was in for a bit of a bump, but was amazed to see a HUGE 17.6% increase in FTP. Pretty awesome. Since I’ve started using TrainerRoad about 7 weeks ago, I’ve shifted my FTP from 2.32 w/kg to 2.90 w/kg. That accounts for a whopping 24.9% increase. Obviously I’m thrilled with this, but how did I do it? And…

Surprise! Gains!

Surprise! Gains!

Well that was unexpected. I’ve made a lot of improvements this year, but usually when I break through last year’s achievements I have ¬†a feeling they’re coming. My fitness is already surpassing last year’s peaks according to Training Peaks. My swimming and cycling CTL are now higher than last year, while running is coming very close. But I’m still surprised when the new breakthroughs happen, well, by surprise. Last night I was at the pool. It’s NHL playoffs, and exam…

Blade Carbon Wheels, Fat Dogs, and Measuring Improvement!

Blade Carbon Wheels, Fat Dogs, and Measuring Improvement!

My Blade Carbon Wheels are arriving next week! Very excited about this one. My Blade Carbon Wheels are going to be here next week, which means I’ll be riding outside again in no time. The weather is starting to be consistently warmer, winds are returning to seasonal, and sun is shining bright. It’s bike riding season! I do a great deal of training with Trainer Road on my turbo trainer. The turbo is great because it requires consistent effort, not…

Hard Recovery

Hard Recovery

Yep, Blargh. The long run from yesterday¬†tapped me a bit. Feeling drained today, so much so that I even have my compression socks on. I should have had them on last night post-run but didn’t think about it. Hard recovery. My 5 AM ride today was supposed to be 80 minutes with 4 x 15 at sweet spot intensity (75% to 90% FTP today) – Trainer Road’s Glassy. I managed to get the first two done but after that my…

Recovery Week Swim, and Fighting with TSS scores!

Recovery Week Swim, and Fighting with TSS scores!

It isn’t often that I post twice in a day, but I had a great swim and I’m really happy about it. Besides, I always have lots to say, so why not?! I find recovery weeks a tough thing. Getting the volume/intensity mix just right is difficult. Especially with swimming. Lately I’ve been hitting the pool three times a week. I’d like to up that to four at some point down the road, but for now I’m in there three…

The World’s Greatest Recovery Sandwich

The World’s Greatest Recovery Sandwich

Recovery drinks are overrated (joke). I’m focusing my science brain on recovery sandwiches. And why not? It’s true what they say – There’s nothing like the love between a man and his sandwich. I’ve “invented” the worlds best. I’m claiming it now, and I’m not even going to bother Googling to see if it is a real thing somewhere else. It’s mine. And here it is: Here’s what’s in it: Whole grain bread with Margarine 1 full can of tuna…

I was going to write this yesterday, but then I fell asleep

Sleep is so wonderful. The last few weeks I’ve been up early for workouts, and I guess I’m still adjusting to this. In the past I’ve never really done morning workouts, with the exception of swimming. I was stupid for not. They’re awesome. And exhausting. On Tuesday of this week I was so wiped I decided that I need to give myself a chance to recuperate a bit. So I’m off work today & tomorrow, making this a four day…

Hard Decisions…

Hard Decisions…

I just got off the turbo trainer. Stopped my workout… 55 minutes early. That was a hard decision. Today I was scheduled to tackle Big Squaw on TrainerRoad. This is a 2.5 hour endurance/tempo session with an IF of .69. So I still managed to hit 95 minutes, which is still decent. I guess. I mean its not nothing. When selecting today’s workout, it being Saturday naturally means a longer ride. I think I’d have been better suited for something…
